As many of you know I periodically write for a blog entitled 66Books in a Year. It’s an opportunity for those reading God’s Word through in a year to do it with a group of others. Each morning a new post comes out for the day with the reading assignment and a brief devotional. We are using the Robert Murray M’Cheyne reading plan this year. Hope you enjoy and are encouraged by my post from this morning.
13“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (ESV).
Matthew 5 is the beginning of three chapters that we include in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. These verses come shortly after a section we commonly refer to as the Beatitudes. It seems throughout these three chapters Jesus teaches his hearers truths that make conventional truth and logic stand on its head. In these three verses Jesus does it again. First of all if you are following Jesus you can be a city of light for Him. What a great privilege that is for us all. If we are light then we are salt in this culture as well. And others should see our good deeds. We are not to hide our good works, but let them be seen be all those around us. Now that does go against our conventional thinking. We tend to do good in secret so that people don’t know who it is that is doing good. This passage states otherwise. The Christ-follower who is full of His light must do good in the sight of all so that everyone will see the good work and glorify God.
First of all are you a Christ-follower? Are you a city full of light? If not trust Christ today and receive the light He gives to all who follow Him. Then go out into the community and do good works in sight of everyone. When people ask give the glory to Jesus where it belongs. If you’re shy, talk another Christ-follower to do these good deeds with you. Who knows you might start a movement of God that will mark this new decade!
Father God thank you that we are cities of light. Of your Light! Help us to shine that light through the good deeds we do so that many will glorify You! We humbly thank You for giving us this great privilege of being Your lights in this dark world. We pray these things in Jesus Name, Amen.
